ASSP Chesapeake Chapter Professional Development Scholarships

The ASSP Chesapeake Chapter offers professional development scholarships to safety professionals for continuing education such as:

  • Attending a professional education seminar or symposium
  • Attending a professional development conference
  • Supplementary college coursework

Applicants must be members in good standing of ASSP Chesapeake Chapter. Limit one professional development scholarship in any five-year period. Scholarships are for course registration and fees but not related travel expenses. Maximum award $1,000. Scholarship recipients must agree to present key concepts from their course at a Chapter meeting within 12 months after course completion.

Chesapeake Chapter ASSP Scholarships Available

Purpose & Goal of the Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) to:

  • Seek out and encourage qualified and dedicated students on the undergraduate level to continue their education in the occupational health and safety field.
  • Support and enhance quality safety education programs at an accredited college or university.

Funding and Award

  • Funding will come from the Chesapeake Chapter ASSP as a single check paid to the college or University.
  • Two $1000.00 scholarships to be awarded to the qualified recipients.

Criteria for the Award

  • Must be enrolled in at least the second semester of a credited College or University in the Occupational Health and Safety Degree Program or a Certificate Program.
  • Must have completed at least one semester of safety credit courses totaling 9 credits.
  • Must be a Maryland resident.
  • Must have an overall “B” academic average (i.e., 3.0 or better based on a 4.0 grading system).
  • The application along with all the supporting documents including the Program Coordinator/Faculty Advisor Form must be submitted to the Chesapeake Chapter ASSP by email.

Required Documentation

  • Download and submit the student application form.
  • Provide an informal transcript from the college or university.
  • Download and include the completed and signed Program Coordinator/Faculty Advisor form along with the recommendation letter on College University letterhead.
  • Submit a type written essay, not to exceed 300 words, that includes:
    • Why you are seeking a degree/certificate in occupational health and safety.
    • A brief description of current activities (e.g., academically, work and/or community based activities) and how they may relate to your prospective career in occupational health and safety.
    • Description of why you should be awarded this scholarship (i.e., career goals, financial need,etc.).

Definitions and Terms

  • Undergraduate Level Program – Associate of Arts or Bachelors of Science Degree
  • College or University: Any accredited college or university. Community colleges are included within this definition.
  • Course work: May include either on‐campus courses or on‐line courses offered by an accredited College or University.
  • Safety Credit Courses: Courses offered for academic credit consisting of Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene and/or Environment Health and Safety.
  • Associated Course: Courses of basic science that may include is fundamental basis of occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene and environmental health, e.g., chemistry physics, math, engineering, math.
  • Informal transcript: Document from the college or university indicating student information, courses taken, credit hours and grade points awarded. Does not have to be a sealed transcript.
